KARACHI:
Sailors, including Pakistanis being held on the Somali oil tanker Honer 25, are now out of food, medicine, and water, the crew members told their families on Saturday.

On April 21, over 50 pirates captured an oil tanker sailing from Oman to Somalia. The tanker has 17 crew members, including 10 Pakistanis.

The pirates let the seventeen captured sailors call their families on Saturday. The Pakistani sailors each got five minutes to talk to their relatives.

According to the ship’s third officer, Kashif Umar, who is from Karachi, only rice remains on the vessel, which is boiled and eaten once a day.

He reported that three crew members are sick, and they’ve run out of medicine. He also said their biggest problem is getting drinking water.

“Umar said they now have to drink the pirates’ dirty, muddy water because the pirates used up all of the crew’s water.”

The Ansar Burney Trust got a video from the ship’s captain, who is from the Philippines. In it, the captain shows papers about who owns the ship.

He asked Pakistan’s government to quickly reach out to the pirates and the ship’s owner to free the Pakistani people.

The leader of the Ansar Burney Trust stated they kept getting calls for help from the ship, but the government didn’t respond at all.

He said the trust couldn’t help free the Pakistani sailors much unless the government helped them.

For the second time in 22 years, the pirates let the hostages talk to their families and those they trust.

Last week, Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi said Pakistan is talking to Somalia about the Pakistani sailors held hostage on a hijacked oil tanker. He said the sailors are believed to be safe. Pakistan’s embassy in Djibouti contacted Somali officials, who said the tanker is near Eyl in Puntland, a semi-independent part of Somalia.

The spokesperson said they think the crew is safe, adding that Somalia’s Foreign Affairs Ministry is helping and watching closely.
