Lawmakers refuse 307 requests to reduce spending

ISLAMABAD: On Sunday, the National Assembly started passing the 2026–27 federal budget. They approved 125 funding requests totaling Rs9.171 trillion, while voting down 307 changes proposed by the opposition.
Led by Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, the House met to review requests from the National Assembly, the Senate, and 31 government departments, which were presented by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb.
The opposition proposed 307 budget cuts, targeting the Cabinet, Energy, and Finance divisions. However, the house rejected all of these proposals.
Instead, the house approved 1.53 trillion rupees for the Cabinet Division, 4.262 trillion rupees for the Finance Division, and 6.61 trillion rupees for the Energy Division.
The House approved several budgets: Rs389 billion for Climate Change, Rs279.9 billion for Commerce, and Rs1.25 trillion for Communications. Defence received Rs3.06723 trillion, with an extra Rs2.11 billion for Defence Production.
Other funds include Rs150.1 billion for Economic Affairs, Rs1.2126 trillion for Education, and Rs681.7 billion for Foreign Affairs. Additionally, Housing and Works got Rs223.1 billion, Human Rights got Rs23.3 billion, Industries got Rs295.3 billion, and the Interior Ministry received Rs450.4 billion.
The Information and Broadcasting Division got Rs275.7 billion, Information Technology got Rs420.7 billion, and Inter-Provincial Coordination got Rs50.2 billion. Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan Affairs were given Rs31.8 billion, Law and Justice got Rs249.1 billion, and Maritime Affairs got Rs41.2 billion.
The National Assembly received Rs90.3 billion, the Senate got Rs32.1 billion, and National Health Services received Rs532.8 billion. Parliamentary Affairs was given Rs12 billion, the Planning Division got Rs372.1 billion, and the Privatisation Division got Rs17.4 billion.
The Railways got Rs1.1113 trillion, Religious Affairs got Rs24 billion, Science and Technology got Rs197.4 billion, and Water Resources got Rs1.07 trillion. On Monday, discussions will continue regarding Rs1.24286 trillion for the Interior, Food Security, and Poverty Alleviation departments, as well as 280 motions from the opposition.
