Request to meet in jail before £190m case hearing.

ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi have appealed the Islamabad High Court’s (IHC) decision that allowed one last chance to present arguments in the £190 million case.
On Monday, the petitioners, through lawyer Salman Safdar, submitted requests in the capital’s high court, disagreeing with the court’s order and calling it too strict, unwarranted, and unjust.
On May 15, the IHC gave Safdar a final deadline of May 20 to argue his appeal in the £190 million case, and warned that there would be no more delays.
A court bench, led by Chief Justice Sardar Muhammed Sarfraz Dogar and Justice Muhammad Asif, issued a written order expressing worry about the case being delayed many times without any progress.
The court noted that at the May 7 hearing, everyone was told to be there and ready to present their arguments.
Even so, the court stated that the lawyer asked for a delay with flimsy reasons instead of presenting arguments. The court mentioned that Safdar himself filed the initial appeals, thus he must proceed promptly.
Recognizing the case’s delicate nature, the court gave a ‘last chance’ to present arguments.
The applicants disagreed with the order, saying that giving a final deadline for arguments doesn’t fit the case’s details.
The requests asked the court to tell the jail to set up a meeting between Imran, Bushra, and their lawyer, so they can sign the paperwork authorizing the lawyer to act for them.
The filings say that between March 19, 2025, and April 30, 2026, the case was never delayed. They also say the first delay was asked for on May 7 for real reasons.
The applicants argued that the PTI founder and Bushra Bibi are upset by the court’s April 30 ruling and have the right to appeal it to the Supreme Court.
The applications claimed that the jail boss wrongly blocked meetings with lawyers to get instructions.
The applications also said that jail officials haven’t helped them sign the legal documents needed to appeal the April 30 decision in the Supreme Court. They asked the court to order jail officials to allow meetings and make sure the legal papers can be signed.
Last January, a court in Islamabad found Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi guilty in the 190 million pound case. Imran was sentenced to 14 years in prison, and his wife got 7 years.
The PTI founder and his wife both questioned the decision later in the IHC.
