The gas crisis is getting worse because supply is running out, even when it is supposed to be available.

Customers say that gas takes 15 to 20 minutes to start flowing because only air is in the pipes at first.

Gas Crisis Deepens as Supply Shortage Worsens Despite Availability Promises
Gas Crisis Worsens as Supply Runs Out Even During Availability Periods

HYDERABAD: Even though it is very hot, the Sui Southern Gas Company is not providing gas in Hyderabad, even during the 9-hour daily slots they promised.

The water shortage is making people, especially women, very frustrated as they struggle to do housework in the extreme summer heat.

According to SSGC, gas is scheduled to be available for three hours in the morning (6am–9am), afternoon (12pm–3pm), and night (6pm–9pm).

However, people living in crowded, poor areas say the company is not following this schedule. Even when gas is available, the pressure is so low that it is hard to cook. Many residents complain that when the supply starts, only air comes through the pipes for about 20 minutes. To clear the air, women often leave their stoves on, which causes gas meters to run constantly and leads to much higher monthly bills.

“We are wasting money on gas just to heat up air, and it takes us hours to cook one meal,” a resident of Latifabad said.

The timing of this crisis has made things worse. Because Hyderabad is experiencing extreme summer heat, low pressure is making food take longer to cook.

Women say making simple food like tea or curry takes much longer now, so they have to stay in hot kitchens longer. It is also hard to host guests because families cannot serve meals on time. This long shortage has caused a sudden increase in the need for other options.

Reports show that more people are buying electric stoves, induction cookers, and solar ovens, as well as small LPG gas cylinders. Fiberglass cylinders are becoming popular because they are light and do not rust. However, this change is expensive. Customers are facing higher gas bills and must spend thousands on new cylinders, plus at least Rs2,500 every month for refills. Meanwhile, politicians are staying silent.

Even though many people protested, local leaders in Hyderabad have not talked to SSGC about the problem. Politicians previously promised there would be no power cuts between 6 and 9 am, but residents say this was not true. One customer said, ‘We were told the mornings would have electricity, but we have nothing.’

With summer at its peak and no relief in sight, Hyderabadis are demanding that SSGC either restore full supply or revise its billing to exclude air discharge periods.
