CAIRO: Gaza health officials said an Israeli airstrike killed at least eight Palestinians and wounded 20 at a funeral in Nuseirat, central Gaza Strip, on Friday. The funeral was for a person killed by another Israeli strike earlier that day.

Medics said these deaths, plus three Palestinians killed in other Israeli airstrikes in Gaza, brought Friday’s total to at least 12.

Hamas called the Nuseirat attack a “brutal massacre” against people who were mourning. They asked mediators and the United Nations to stop Israeli attacks in Gaza.

When asked about the Nuseirat attack, the Israeli military said it hit a group from the Islamic Jihad militant group, which has power.

The army said it ‘knows about the reports that several people not involved in fighting were hurt because of the attack.

The truce stopped big fights but didn’t stop almost daily Israeli attacks. Israel says it targets fighters. Four Israeli soldiers were killed by fighters in Gaza during the same time.

Conflict monitor ACLED, a US research group that tracks political violence, said Israeli airstrikes against Hamas and other fighters rose to over 40 in June, the highest monthly total since the ceasefire.
