A Muslim man was stabbed many times in the US because of his religion, police say.

Police said the stabbing happened at Utah’s Valley Fair Mall.

Police in Utah, USA, said on Tuesday that a man was arrested for stabbing a Muslim man many times. He said he attacked the man because of his religion.

Police said the suspect told them he ‘wants to kill Muslims’ and that he is ‘a big danger to the public if let go, because of his violent actions, beliefs, and planned mass killings.’

The event happened on Monday inside the Valley Fair Mall in West Valley City, Utah. The man who was hurt had many stab wounds all over his body and was bleeding a lot, police said in a report.

Authorities said that people at the scene held the suspect down on the ground before police got there.

Police say a 48-year-old man named Peter Michael Larsen is in jail for trying to kill a Muslim man who worked at a kiosk. He was arrested on Tuesday for attempted murder and having a dangerous weapon.

Larsen told police he chose the victim because of his religion, Islam.

The suspect walked up to the Muslim man, asked his name, asked about his religion, and said he wanted a bottle of water, the Salt Lake Tribune reported. It got this from Imam Shuaib Din, who leads the Utah Islamic Center and had talked to the victim’s family.

Din said that when the victim turned to get the water, the attacker started stabbing him.

The injured person was taken to the hospital and was very sick. A friend made a website to raise money for him. It said the man, who is Muslim, was stabbed 15 times and needed operations.

The attacker was also sent to the hospital for injuries he got while being stopped by regular people. Later, he was taken to jail in Salt Lake County.

Muslim groups, such as the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said this event was wrong.

US human rights groups say hate against Muslims has grown in the last 20+ years after the 9/11 attacks. Recently, anger has risen due to laws against immigration, racism, and violence from Israel’s war in Gaza.

Bad crimes include a 2023 stabbing of a 6-year-old Muslim boy in Illinois; his killer got 53 years in prison but died while there. Also, a 2026 shooting at a San Diego mosque killed five people, including two teen attackers.
