ISLAMABAD:
Reports that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) deported Pakistani citizens caused a big argument in the Senate on Thursday. The opposition party cautioned that this action could seriously harm Pakistan’s economy.
But the government disagreed with how big the numbers were and said they would share confirmed dates in parliament.
Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry told the Senate that there’s no proof Pakistanis are being targeted in the UAE. He said deportations are just regular actions by UAE officials.
In response to a notice raised by opposition leader Raja Nasir Abbas and Senators Samina Mumtaz Zehri and Azam Khan Swati, the minister stated that Pakistan and the UAE have a long history of friendly relations. He added that the Pakistani community, with over two million people, is the second-largest foreign group living in the UAE.
Senate Opposition Leader Allama Raja Nasir Abbas brought up the issue, worried about the situation. He urged immediate talks with the UAE and legal help for affected Pakistani workers.
Raja Nasir Abbas stated about 2,000 people were apparently sent back from the UAE. Their bank accounts and money are now locked or they can’t get to them.
He also mentioned that people from Kurram Agency and South Punjab were among those impacted.
He mentioned that almost 164,000 Pakistanis were sent back from the UAE. He cautioned that these many expulsions would negatively impact Pakistan’s economy during this period of high inflation.
He asked the government to quickly start talks with the UAE to fix this problem and help the people who are affected.
He also emphasized that the government should quickly fix the problems faced by Pakistanis who were deported.
In Parliament, Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry said the government will share complete and accurate numbers once the Foreign Affairs Ministry provides the details.
He stated that Pakistan and the UAE have a good relationship.
He told lawmakers that reports show 3,494 people were deported. He added that Pakistanis with valid visas were working legally in the UAE.
The minister stated that when someone is living in the UAE illegally, the Pakistani embassies are notified, and some people are sent back home because they were involved in crimes.
He also mentioned that the economy made some Pakistani workers lose their jobs in other countries.
Tariq Fazal Chaudhry also mentioned that social media sometimes blows things out of proportion, causing needless worry among the public.
He told the House that, based on reports about the region, four Pakistanis died and 27 were hurt in the conflict between Iran and the US.
