Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif arrives in Qatar to offer condolences on the passing of the country's former ruler during an official visit.
PM Shehbaz Sharif visits Qatar to offer condolences over the former ruler’s passing.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif came to Doha on Monday for a one-day visit to Qatar. He went there to say sorry about the death of the former leader of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, as said by the Prime Minister’s Office.

The prime minister, along with PML-N President Nawaz Sharif, was welcomed at Doha airport by Qatar’s Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister, Sheikh Saud bin Abdulrahman bin Hassan bin Ali Al Thani.

The Prime Minister’s Office said the prime minister will go to Lusail Palace to meet Qatar’s ruler, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and express sadness to the Qatari leader, the royal family, and the people of Qatar about the death of the late Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, along with Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, are also in the group, the PMO said.

In an earlier announcement, the PMO said the visit shows the ‘long-time brotherly bonds’ between Pakistan and Qatar. It also shows the close link between Qatar’s royal family, Qatar’s people, and the governments and citizens of both countries.

The visit happens as Qatar is in a time of sadness after the death of its former leader, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.

Qatar’s former ruler, who changed Qatar from its desert roots into a strong regional power, died at age 74, the country’s top government office said on Sunday.

Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani led Qatar from 1995 to 2013, then gave up power to his son Sheikh Tamim, who is now the leader of the gas-rich Gulf country.

The government office in Qatar said on Sunday that the former leader, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, has died. They ask God to be kind to him and reward him for what he did for his country and people.

Sheikh Hamad made Qatar more famous worldwide by starting the Al Jazeera news network and by winning the chance to hold the 2022 soccer World Cup.

This country, allied with the US, is small and has over 2.5 million people. But it is the world’s biggest exporter of liquefied natural gas, a major force in global investment, and important in Middle East diplomacy and international media.

Sheikh Hamad gave power to his son, who was the crown prince at the time, in June 2013. This was a rare step for a Gulf Arab ruler, who usually keeps power for life. He did it to make sure the change in leadership was smooth. He himself had taken power from his father in a bloodless coup in 1995.
