KARACHI: The Salt Makers Group of Pakistan (SMAP) said the government’s choice to change petrol prices every day is very bad for business, trade, and the whole economy. They asked Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to quickly look at the rule again.

SMAP’s top leader Ismail Suttar warned that making things in factories is already too costly because of high power and gas bills, plus heavy taxes. If petrol prices change daily, he said, business work will be badly broken, and running factories will become almost impossible.

“On one side, the government says it wants to help business, industry, and investment, but on the other side, it makes choices that cause new problems for factories and companies,” he said.

Suttar warned that if businesses and factories close, the government will have trouble getting taxes and money, because Pakistan’s economy relies a lot on industry and business.

He said that daily changes in oil prices would not only hurt factories but also cause a new wave of rising prices for regular people, who were already under a lot of financial pressure. He stressed that the government should avoid policies that add more strain on the economy, businesses, and people, and instead create a setting where industries can work smoothly and create jobs.

Talking about the salt industry, Suttar explained that salt is a cheap but heavy product, where transport costs are a big part of making it. If fuel prices change every day, frequent changes in transport costs will mess up business plans and make it very hard for traders to set prices and keep supply chains stable.

He suggested that the government change oil prices every week.
