NEW JERSEY: Ferran Torres scored the only goal on Sunday. Spain beat Argentina, who had only 10 players, 1-0 after extra time. This gave Spain their second World Cup win.

The European champions were the stronger team at MetLife Stadium but had a hard time scoring against the smart defending champions.

Argentina‘s goalie Emiliano Martinez stopped many shots from Spain, but the game changed in the last minutes of the second half. Midfielder Enzo Fernandez got a second yellow card and was sent off for a dangerous tackle on Pau Cubarsi.

Then came extra time, which was similar to before. Spain kept trying to score against a defensive Argentina team.

The change finally happened early in the second half of extra time, when substitute Torres scored cleanly after a great pass back by Nico Williams.

Luis de la Fuente’s Spain team only let in one goal in seven games on their way to the final, overwhelming opponents with their smooth ball control.

Lionel Messi’s Argentina fought hard in the later games, surviving a tough match against Egypt and coming from behind to beat England in the semi-finals.
