The UK government said on Thursday it would stop selling high-caffeine energy drinks to kids under 16 in England starting next April. It said this would protect children’s health.
The ban covers drinks with more than 150 mg of caffeine per liter. It needs parliament’s approval and applies to shops, vending machines, and online sales.
Ministers said about 100,000 children in England drink these drinks every day and mentioned evidence that links them to sleep problems, anxiety, and poor focus.
The energy drinks ban is the newest in a set of actions by outgoing Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government to reduce risks for children and teenagers.
Britain plans to ban social media for kids under 16 and set automatic overnight social media limits for 16 and 17-year-olds, saying these rules will help young people’s health, sleep and happiness.
