ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif told the National Assembly on Friday that fuel prices would drop significantly later today. He asked all political parties to support a new resolution to show national unity. He also praised Pakistan’s recent diplomatic work, stating it helped bring global peace.

The session was led by Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, and lawmakers welcomed the Prime Minister by clapping their hands on their desks.

Speaking to Parliament during the budget meeting, PM Shehbaz said oil prices have dropped because of a ceasefire and hoped they would go even lower.

He said that, God willing, a large price cut for fuel will be announced this Friday.

The prime minister said Pakistan has gained international respect. He asked all lawmakers, regardless of their political party, to support a single, united decision.

He stated that if they all agree on this matter, it will show the world that the country is united. He added that politics should not get in the way of what is best for the nation.

PM Shehbaz said Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir worked very hard over the last few months to help secure a global peace deal.

He also thanked Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi for their help, noting that talks almost failed several times.

The prime minister also congratulated opposition members, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, President Asif Ali Zardari, and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.

PM Shehbaz told parliament that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian called him on Thursday to say thank you to Pakistan and to praise General Asim Munir.

The prime minister said he invited the Iranian president to visit Pakistan, and the invitation was accepted. He also mentioned that Iran invited Pakistan to attend the funeral of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, and a group from Pakistan will go.

The premier thanked provincial governments, the Petroleum Minister, petroleum officials, and the Finance Minister for helping manage the economy during tough times.

He said government actions prevented fuel shortages and long lines at petrol stations, unlike what happened in Sri Lanka.

Prime Minister Shehbaz later went to sit with Opposition Leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai and PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan to shake their hands.

Speaker Ayaz Sadiq updated the group on the budget debate, noting that government members still had two and a half hours left to speak.

He said 66 opposition lawmakers joined the debate. Although they were given nine hours to speak, they actually spoke for over 14 hours, going past their time limit by about five hours.

The speaker denied claims that the opposition was silenced, saying they had repeatedly invited members to speak.

He said Thursday’s meeting was extended by 30 minutes to allow for more speeches. Government members were invited to speak, but no one did.

Ayaz Sadiq announced that Friday’s meeting is postponed until Saturday before Friday prayers.

During a debate, PPP lawmaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf said that an agreement between Iran and the US showed Pakistan wants world peace. He claimed Pakistan helped prevent a third world war.

He praised Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and General Asim Munir. He also asked to increase government workers’ salaries by 10 percent, saying the suggested 7 percent increase is not enough.

Ashraf said that for the economy to grow and attract foreign money, the country needs stable politics, better law enforcement, less poverty, and agreement on policies.

He also talked about the situation in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). He mentioned he was part of a team that agreed to 80% of the protesters’ demands, but the problem regarding refugee seats has not been fixed yet.

Ashraf said that during the talks, electricity prices were lowered to Rs3 per unit and flour became cheaper through subsidies. He suggested creating a new committee to talk and asked both the protesters and the government to keep communicating.

Opposition Leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai told the House that people should not use this situation to attack political rivals. He emphasized that parliament, the military, and the country’s interests belong to all Pakistanis.

He asked to give power back to parliament and told the prime minister to make decisions on his own. Achakzai also spoke against suspending lawmaker Iqbal Afridi during the budget meeting and asked for him to be reinstated. He promised his party would fully support parliament and democracy.

Afterward, the prime minister spoke briefly with Achakzai, Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, and former speaker Asad Qaiser. Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb also joined, and then the prime minister spoke to him privately to give him instructions.

Also, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif met with opposition leaders in the House to talk and share ideas.
