LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif announced that the government is working to make sure smoking is banned in schools and colleges. On World No Tobacco Day, she reminded everyone that smoking in government offices, public transport, and other public areas is illegal. She promised that the law will be strictly enforced.
She said the government would do everything possible to stop young people from smoking and vaping. She added that teaching people about the dangers of tobacco is not just the government’s job, but everyone’s responsibility.
At the same time, Dr. Masood Sheikh, head of the General Cadre Doctors Association, said at a workshop that about 80% of the world’s 1.3 billion tobacco users live in poorer or developing nations.
World No Tobacco Day is on May 31.
Dr. Sheikh said that using e-cigarettes can lead people, especially young non-smokers, to start smoking regular cigarettes.
New data shows that at least 40 million teenagers aged 13 to 15 around the world currently use tobacco. This includes 20 million who smoke cigarettes and 10 million who use smokeless tobacco.
Dr. Asad Abbas Shah said that using any kind of tobacco is bad for you, and there is no safe amount to use.
Dr. Javaid Mumtaz said that smoking costs money in two ways: paying for medical treatments for related illnesses and losing workers due to sickness and death.
