The number of stomach bug cases that cause bad diarrhea is going up fast in the U.S. In June, only a few dozen cases of cyclosporiasis were reported in the country, but by July 9, Michigan alone had 1,251 cases, says the state’s health department.

Intestinal parasite cases are rising rapidly across the United States, raising public health concerns.

Cyclosporiasis comes from a tiny germ called Cyclospora cayetanensis, which can spread through dirty food or water. It’s usually not deadly, but it can cause severe diarrhea and sometimes sudden, explosive bowel movements, as the CDC says.

The CDC stopped updating its national case count on June 16. At that time, there were 145 cases in 17 states. Michigan had no cases then. By June 30, Michigan reported 170 cases, and the number keeps going up.

On July 4, Michigan officials said no specific fresh produce supplier was linked to the outbreak. When asked for more comments, they chose not to say anything more than their first statement.

The announcement also told people and restaurants in southeastern Michigan to take safety steps to stop the sickness from spreading more. These steps included buying whole lettuce heads instead of prewashed bags or salad mixes.

Also, the state said to throw away the outer two or three lettuce layers and wash the remaining leaves with running water before using them.

Officials also said to wash leafy vegetables like cilantro and basil, plus snow peas, and peel off the outer layer of green onions. They suggested not eating fresh, raw raspberries.

Michigan is not the only state hit lately; since May 1, New York has reported 394 cases, with 273 in New York City. This is a rise from 31 to 80 cases, based on CDC data as of June 16.

A person from the New York State Department of Health said there is no proof that the different outbreaks across the U.S. are from one specific cause.

They also said that cyclosporiasis cases usually go up in spring and summer, and the current number of cases in the state is similar to past years.
