Calls grow for a swift investigation after reports of leaked A-Level examination papers.

ISLAMABAD: The Senate committee on education told officials on Tuesday to speed up the probe into the reported leak of Cambridge A-Level exam papers and make sure the issue is fixed before July 21.

The group, led by Senator Bushra Anjum Butt, showed worry about the problem during its meeting at parliament.

In May, Cambridge International Education (CIE) said a test for AS-level Math was leaked, and they delayed another Math test.

Students who took the AS-level Math test said the test they got was the same as a solved test they saw on social media just one day before.

Before, the AS Level Math test (9709/12), held on April 29, also had similar claims.

In the meeting, the Inter Board Committee of Chairmen (IBCC) told the committee that it gave the evidence it had to Cambridge Assessment and the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) to investigate and take action.

The chair ordered letters to be sent to the important people, asking them to speed up the check and make sure the problem is fixed by July 21.

The group was told about the problem of confirming degrees for students who finished at unofficial locations of PIMSAT, the University of South Asia in Lahore, and NICE in Karachi.

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) told the meeting that it had approved 4,383 of about 6,000 affected students for degree verification.

The meeting learned that an online system was set up to make the degree verification process easier. The chairperson asked the officials to give a detailed report at the next meeting on how many degrees were verified using this system.

The committee also talked about a long-standing problem: the degrees from Al-Khair University were not being verified.

The meeting was also told that the commission planned to give a test to check the students’ degrees, but the test hasn’t happened yet.

The panel told HEC to fix the problem by using the same rules they used before for Global University, Lahore, and give a full report in 10 to 15 days.

The chairperson was very worried about the long wait and said HEC was careless for many years in solving this issue.

She said it would not be fair to ask people who finished their studies years ago to take a test now.

The group stressed the need for a quick and fair solution to the problem to protect the school and work interests of the students affected.

The HEC also told the committee about its plagiarism rules, saying that how much plagiarism is allowed changes depending on the subject, with the most allowed being 19%. It also told the committee that Turnitin software is used to find and check plagiarism in academic research.
