Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir arrives in Tehran as part of diplomatic efforts aimed at helping negotiate an end to the ongoing Iran war and ease regional tensions.
General Asim Munir Reaches Tehran for Iran Peace Talks.
  • Sources say that CDF Munir will meet with top Iranian leaders in Tehran.
  • A report says the US and Iran disagree about Iran’s uranium amount and the Strait of Hormuz.
  • Rubio says there’s a ‘Plan B’ if Iran doesn’t reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Pakistan’s top military officer, General Asim Munir, went to Tehran, Iran on Friday. According to military sources, he is there to help stop the war between the US and Israel against Iran.

The military’s press office stated that Field Marshal Munir was greeted and well-received upon arrival by Iran’s Interior Minister, Eskandar Momeni.

The statement also mentioned that Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi attended the reception.

Sources say that during the visit, CDF Munir will talk about the Iran-US discussions, peace and stability in the area, and other topics of shared interest.

Sources say that while there, the Army Chief will also meet with top Iranian leaders to talk about working together and what’s happening in the area.

A fragile ceasefire is holding after a war started when the US and Israel attacked Iran on February 28. Iran then shot at Gulf countries with US bases, and Israel and Hezbollah started fighting in Lebanon.

Peace talks haven’t made much progress. The US is blocking Iranian ports, and Iran controls the Strait of Hormuz, an important path for oil. This makes talks led by Pakistan difficult.

This visit happens while Pakistan is still trying to help the United States and Iran talk to each other, even though plans for another meeting in Islamabad fell through.

The first direct talks between the US and Iran happened in Islamabad on April 11 and 12, after a ceasefire on April 8 that Pakistan helped arrange. The talks ended without a deal, but they didn’t completely fail.

Pakistan is trying hard to end the stalemate by sending Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi to Tehran on Wednesday, his second visit in a week, hoping to restart talks.

During his visit last weekend, Naqvi met with Iran’s president, the speaker of parliament, and the foreign minister.

Pakistan is still the main party we talk to.

On Friday, United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that everyone wants to reach an agreement with Iran, but they are not ready yet.

Rubio said there should be a backup plan if Iran doesn’t reopen the Strait of Hormuz. He also mentioned that NATO hadn’t been specifically asked to help with the strait.

A Qatari team came to Tehran on Friday, working with the U.S., to help make a deal to end the war with Iran and fix problems still open, a source told Reuters.

Rubio mentioned some progress on Thursday, saying, “There are some positive signs. I don’t want to get too excited, so let’s see what happens in the next few days.”

When asked Friday about the Qatari team in Iran, Rubio told reporters at a NATO foreign ministers meeting in Sweden that Pakistan was the main negotiator in the Iran talks and had done a very good job.

He also said that other countries have reasons to be interested, especially those in the Gulf, because of their own local issues. He mentioned that they talk to all of these countries. However, he emphasized that Pakistan is still the main country they are working with on this matter.

Doha, a mediator in the Gaza war and other global issues, had avoided mediating in the Iran war after it was attacked by Iranian missiles and drones in the recent conflict.

The war has badly hurt the world economy. Rising oil prices are making people worry about high inflation. Before the war, a large amount of the world’s oil and gas was shipped through the Strait of Hormuz.

The US dollar was close to a six-week high on Friday because of worries about the peace talks. Oil prices went up as investors weren’t sure the talks would succeed.
