The 2026 High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance will happen in Shanghai, China, from July 17 to 20. Analysts say this event will be a big platform for countries to work together, innovate technology, and make rules for the fast-changing AI field, as reported by Anadolu Agency.
The four-day conference, with the theme ‘AI Partnership for a Brighter Future,’ will bring together global tech leaders, policymakers, researchers, and industry experts to talk about the latest AI developments and governance challenges.
China’s Foreign Ministry said President Xi Jinping will go to the opening ceremony and give a main speech. This shows Beijing thinks AI is important for growing the economy and for world rules.
The conference will have more than 140 discussion groups and bring in over 1,400 people from all over the world. Also, a show area that is over 100,000 square meters will show the newest AI inventions, as said by International Services Shanghai (ISS), the official website of the Shanghai city government. More than 1,100 companies are expected to join, showing over 3,000 items, including more than 300 products that are being shown globally for the first time.
Organizers say the event has become one of the world’s most important AI meetings. It is a place to show big steps forward in areas like large language models, AI helpers, factory uses, and open-source systems, as reported by the Global Times news website.
This year’s event will go beyond shows and talks, moving into public areas in Shanghai to bring AI into city life and communities. The plan includes helping new ideas grow, sharing talent, and contests to support startups and build stronger business connections.
ISS said famous speakers at the meeting will include top scientists and award winners, like Richard Sutton, who started reinforcement learning, and Yoshua Bengio, an expert in deep learning. They will talk about global rules and new tech trends.
A big topic at WAIC 2026 will be how to manage AI around the world. People from many countries and groups will talk about rules, safety, and making sure everyone can use AI fairly. Chinese leaders say we need countries to work together, manage risks, and include all nations, especially poorer ones, so AI helps everyone.
China says it supports global teamwork on AI. It has started plans like the Global AI Governance Initiative and an action plan to agree on rules and methods. Officials say the conference will help “give new energy” to AI growth worldwide by encouraging countries to work together and share control.
Shanghai is becoming a big center for AI, with many top AI companies and a fast-growing industry. The conference is also expected to show how China’s impact on the future of AI and its rules around the world is growing.
