Students in Peshawar take to the streets to protest against rising university and college fees.

PESHAWAR: On Monday, many students from government colleges protested in Peshawar because their fees, especially new sports charges, increased significantly.

A large crowd gathered at Assembly Chowk with banners and shouted against the government’s decision. Because of the large police presence, protesters were kept near Souray Bridge, which caused traffic jams on the busy GT Road.

Protesters held signs demanding that the fee increase be canceled immediately. They shouted slogans against the government, calling the decision unfair to students and the poor.

During the protest, students explained that the government added over Rs4,000 per semester for sports. They noted that most colleges do not even have sports facilities or activities, yet they are still being charged.

“Before, one semester fee for a BS degree was about Rs11,000. Now, they want Rs20,000,” students said. They explained that this increase covers exam fees, lab costs, project fees, and other charges.

The protesters called this decision unfair to poor students. They said, “The government claims there is an education emergency, but at the same time, they are making it impossible for poor students to study with these tough decisions.”

They warned that raising fees at 145 government colleges would take millions of rupees from students. This might make college too expensive for many people from poor families.
