ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court will set a date to discuss a legal issue regarding the failure to follow a court order. The order allowed meetings with PTI founder Imran Khan. This will be done following the court’s new rule for scheduling cases.
A high-ranking Supreme Court official told The Express Tribune that the legal complaint regarding denied meetings with Imran Khan will be handled under a new court policy. This complaint follows a court order that originally allowed the meetings.
Previously, on May 20, PTI leader Salman Akram Raja met with Chief Justice Yahya Afridi to ask the court to speed up cases related to Imran Khan.
After the meeting, Raja told reporters that the chief justice promised Khan’s cases would be heard shortly after Eid.
Last November, Raja appealed to the Supreme Court. He did this because the Islamabad High Court rejected his complaint about prison officials failing to follow an order to let Khan meet his family and lawyers.
We understand that the contempt case is number 60 on the Supreme Court’s schedule. The Chief Justice is strictly following the court’s rule to handle contempt cases in a specific order.
However, experienced lawyers are worried. This is a big deal because it involves the former prime minister, who has had almost no contact with his family or lawyers since December.
Meanwhile, the government claims that Imran Khan often meets with his wife, Bushra Bibi, while in Adiala Jail.
Lawyers believe that cases regarding human rights are not being treated as a priority under Chief Justice Yahya Afridi.
Since the 26th Amendment passed, the PTI party has had a hard time getting help from high courts. Important legal requests regarding its leader, Imran Khan, and other top officials are stuck without progress, making the party’s future uncertain.
Even though the party keeps asking the courts to hear Imran Khan’s cases while he is in prison, the legal process is moving very slowly.
Even after filing many requests, the party did not get any help from the Islamabad High Court.
Surprisingly, although many important legal cases are still waiting, the PTI is hesitant to go to the Federal Constitutional Court.
After Chief Justice Yahya Afridi met with Salman Akram Raja, the PTI party hoped for better results from the Supreme Court, but that hope has now disappeared.
Experts believe that meetings with Imran Khan might only happen again if he stops criticizing the military/security agencies when speaking to his family in prison.
