- The Prime Minister thanked President Trump and Arab nations.
- He stated Pakistan will keep working with friendly countries.
- The Foreign Office restated its strong support for the Palestinian cause.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised Hamas’s reaction to the Gaza peace plan made with Trump’s help. He mentioned on Saturday that Hamas’s statement could lead to a ceasefire and asked the world to work towards ending the war. He confirmed Pakistan’s support for lasting peace in Palestine, hoping diplomacy will bring relief to Gazans.
This follows Hamas’s acceptance of parts of the U.S. president’s plan to end the conflict and free the hostages from the October 7, 2023, attack. The Prime Minister thanked President Trump, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, Egypt, the UAE, Jordan, and Indonesia for their work at the UNGA meetings. He stated they are closer to a ceasefire than before and Pakistan will always support Palestinians.
He added that Hamas’s statement provides a chance for peace that shouldn’t be missed and Pakistan will keep working with allies to ensure lasting peace in Palestine.
In another statement, the Foreign Office (FO) said they were happy about the Palestinian group’s response. They said, “This is a big chance to get an immediate ceasefire, stop the killing of innocent Palestinians in Gaza, free hostages and Palestinian prisoners, make sure aid gets in easily, and start a real path to lasting peace. Israel needs to stop attacking right away.” Pakistan will keep helping in a useful and important way, the FO added.
Hamas’s response was praised by global leaders and its ally, Palestinian Islamic Jihad. The Islamic Jihad said in a statement that Hamas’s reaction to Trump’s plan represents the stance of Palestinian resistance groups, and they responsibly participated in discussions leading to this decision.
The group’s approval could help free hostages held by both groups in Gaza. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s office stated that Israel is preparing to immediately implement the first part of Trump’s Gaza plan to release Israeli hostages, following Hamas’s response. Palestinians in Gaza reportedly expressed happiness and hope for the war to end after President Trump called for a bombing halt, but Israel continued to strike Gaza.
Israeli fire has killed at least seven people across Gaza since then, according to local authorities. One strike killed four people in a Gaza City house, while another killed two in Khan Younis, medical workers and authorities reported.
Since the war began in October 2023, Israel has killed at least 66,288 people and wounded 169,165. Thousands more are thought to be buried. 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the October 7, 2023, attacks, and about 200 were captured.
