Comparing how Hamas reacted to Trump’s plan for Gaza.

A group fighting for Palestinian freedom now agrees with some main ideas in the Trump plan, but they still disagree on other parts.

On Friday, Hamas reacted to President Trump’s proposal for Gaza, which involves stopping Israel’s war there. The group, which is fighting for Palestinian freedom, agreed to some main parts of Trump’s plan. This includes ending the war, Israel leaving Gaza, freeing Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners, providing aid and recovery, and preventing Palestinians from being forced out of Gaza.

Hamas’s statement and Trump’s plan seemed to disagree about who would govern Gaza and Hamas’s role. Hamas wanted more talks. Here’s what Hamas said it might accept from Trump’s plan:

Releasing Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners: Hamas said it would release Israeli hostages in Gaza, alive or dead, “based on the exchange terms in President Trump’s plan, if the conditions on the ground allow it.”

It was unclear what “necessary field conditions” meant. The militant group said it is ready to start talks through negotiators to discuss more details. The Trump plan states that Hamas will return all hostages “within 72 hours of Israel publicly accepting this agreement.

” Trump’s proposal also says that after this, Israel will release 250 Palestinian prisoners who are serving life sentences, as well as 1,700 Gazans arrested since October 7, 2023, including all women and children. For every Israeli hostage whose remains are given back, Israel will return the remains of 15 dead Gazans, according to the Trump plan.

Ceasefire, end of war, and Israel leaving: Hamas said it agreed to a plan to end the war and have Israel completely leave Gaza. Hamas didn’t mention different stages for Israel’s withdrawal and said it opposed Israeli control. The Trump plan mentioned Israeli forces would pull back to a set line to prepare for releasing hostages. During this time, Israel would stop its military attacks, including air and artillery strikes, and fighting would pause until the conditions for a full, step-by-step withdrawal were met.

Aid, recovery, and no Palestinian removal: Hamas was happy that Trump’s plan called for more aid to Gaza and didn’t ask for Palestinians to be forced out. The Trump plan stated aid would be sent to Gaza immediately in amounts that align with a prior agreement. It also included fixing infrastructure, hospitals, and bakeries, and bringing in equipment to clear rubble and open roads.

Aid would be given through the United Nations, the Red Crescent, and other global groups under the plan. Hamas said it was against Palestinians being displaced from Gaza. The Trump plan noted that “no one will be forced to leave,” and those who want to leave can return freely. The Trump plan encouraged Palestinians to stay in Gaza.

Where does Hamas disagree with Trump’s plan? Foreign involvement in Gaza’s temporary government: The Trump plan mentioned that “Gaza will be governed temporarily by a non-political Palestinian committee of experts,” but it didn’t name any specific Palestinian person or group to be part of the transition.

It stated the panel would be overseen by a new international transitional body, led by Trump, with members including former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair. Hamas said it would agree to give Gaza’s administration to “a Palestinian group of independent experts based on Palestinian agreement and supported by Arab and Islamic countries.” Hamas has previously offered to hand over Gaza’s administration to another body.

Hamas didn’t comment on the idea of a “temporary International Stabilisation Force” in Gaza under the Trump plan, which the US would work on with Arab partners.

Hamas having no role in Gaza’s future: The Trump plan said Hamas must “agree to not have any role in governing Gaza, directly, indirectly, or in any way.” The plan also mentioned there would be a “process of demilitarising Gaza.”

Hamas stated on Friday that this matter relates to a shared national view and follows global laws and decisions. It will be talked about within a broad Palestinian plan, including Hamas, which will participate fully and responsibly. The Hamas statement didn’t mention the Trump plan’s idea of offering forgiveness and safe travel to other countries for Hamas members who give up their weapons.
