A South African legend says India’s refusal to share the Asia Cup trophy is strange and disappointing.

AB de Villiers, a famous South African batter, is not happy that India didn’t take the Asia Cup 2025 trophy from Mohsin Naqvi, who leads the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
De Villiers thinks politics is getting in the way of sports. On his YouTube channel, “AB de Villiers 360,” he mentioned that the messy trophy event after India won the Asia Cup gave a bad impression.
The Indian team seemed unhappy with who gave them the trophy. I believe politics shouldn’t mix with sports. Sports should be enjoyed for what it is. It’s sad to see this, and I hope they fix it in the future. It puts the sport and the athletes in a difficult spot, which I don’t like. The ending felt very uncomfortable.
The Asia Cup showed obvious tension between the Indian and Pakistani teams. They didn’t shake hands in any of their three games, and the tension continued during the medal and trophy presentations. Previously, Kapil Dev, India’s World Cup-winning captain, told Indians to “move on” and “let politicians handle politics.”
Dev said that while it’s normal for players to love their country, it shouldn’t stop them from being good sports. “Shaking hands isn’t a big deal. So you didn’t shake hands, who cares? You also said you don’t want to accept the trophy from that person. That’s also fine.” He added: “But don’t dwell on such things. Finish it, move on. Let the government and politicians do their jobs.”
