Prime Minister highlights the importance of controlling population growth and supporting sustainable development in Pakistan.
PM urges all stakeholders to address rapid population growth and work together for a sustainable future.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif told everyone, including national and provincial governments, lawmakers, helpers, people’s groups, teachers, business people, religious leaders, news people, and local people, to see the quick growth in population as a big problem for the country. He said they should all help by teaching smart choices, good parenting, equal rights for men and women, and ways to grow without hurting the future.

On World Population Day, the prime minister said this day is a good chance to show how important population problems are around the world.

He also said this year’s theme, “Making Young People’s Hopes and Dreams Come True, Now and in the Future,” shows how important young people are for building a good future. It is our shared duty to make a helpful space for the younger generation.

“Today, Pakistan joins the world in celebrating World Population Day and promises to support careful population planning, which is key for lasting growth and success,” PM Shehbaz said.

He explained that careful and smart population planning builds a welfare-focused society. He added that when the number of people matches available resources, it ensures fair access to public services and helps all citizens live better and prosper.

Pakistan is the fifth most populated country in the world and is one of the countries with a large number of young people. More than 65% of our people are under 30 years old. This is surely a great national resource and a strong driver of economic and social growth.

He said that a yearly population increase of 2.55% creates big problems for a country in areas like economic planning, creating jobs, education, healthcare, housing, food safety, building infrastructure, and keeping the environment healthy.

PM Shehbaz said that to use the full potential of young people and gain benefits from their numbers, we need ongoing investment in our country’s resources and a complete plan.

He said a 2.55% yearly population growth rate means human development and helping people reach their full potential must be the main focus of our national development plans.

The prime minister also noted that the federal government recently created the National Population Council to develop a complete and effective national plan for population and development.

He said this big national meeting will make sure the central and state governments work together on policies, improve teamwork between organizations, and give clear guidance for carrying out the National Population Program.

It will also help make quick and good decisions that match the country’s main goals.

“Also, the Council will make population issues a top priority in the country’s development plan, support women’s empowerment, improve human resources, and create policies based on facts to help long-term social and economic growth,” he said.

To reach the main goal of building capable, responsible, and empowered citizens, the government is also running the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme and other key national projects, PM Shehbaz added.

The prime minister said that all people, no matter their race, ethnicity, or background, especially the poorest and weakest, should have the same right to basic services and be thought about in future plans.

He said education, healthcare, fair chances for the economy, and equal chances for women and girls are still among the top concerns of the government.

“If God wills it! By working together and taking coordinated steps, we can build a world where every person has equal chances to live a healthy, respectful, and useful life,” the prime minister promised.

He finished by saying, “Together, we can turn Pakistan’s large population into lasting national power and ensure a steady, rich, advanced, and strong future for our current and next generations.”

A report from May says Pakistan’s population might grow to 390 million in 25 years, a 62% jump. Of these, 256 million will need jobs—more than the current total population.

Even with birth control, the population will rise to over 383 million, or 59%, by 2050, according to the 2023-50 Population Projections report. Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal released it, and the United Nations Population Fund helped make it.
