KARACHI: Street crime, car theft, and violence are still rising in the unstable city. Data from the CPLC shows worrying numbers for the first five months of this year.
Statistics show that in the first five months of the year, people in Karachi lost 737 vehicles worth millions of rupees, and 16,031 motorcycles were stolen or snatched.
During this same time, street criminals also stole 7,427 mobile phones from people across the city.
The data shows a worrying rise in violent crime, with 232 people killed in murders and targeted attacks during this time.
Additionally, the CPLC reported 71 cases of extortion and three kidnappings for money. In May alone, 20 cars were snatched and 106 were stolen, while 445 motorcycles were snatched and 2,240 were stolen.
In May, phone snatching was common in Karachi, with 1,860 phones stolen. There were also 56 murders, 10 cases of extortion, and one bank robbery, but no kidnappings for money.
Over the first five months, 737 vehicles were taken; 99 were snatched and 638 were stolen. Out of 16,031 motorcycles, 2,223 were snatched and 13,808 were stolen, showing how much motorcycle theft is happening in the city.
Authorities and observers are still worried about frequent street crimes, especially phone snatching and motorcycle theft. These are the most common crimes reported by citizens.
The rising crime numbers contradict police claims that the city is becoming safer, showing that law enforcement still struggles to stop street crime and protect the public.
